Decorating Reminder: Move Things Around & Move Them Often

Today is a short post, mostly because I want to enjoy my lillordag with Charles, as we came to the conclusion yesterday that Wednesdays haven’t really been that special lately (with the exception of that one time we went to the beach a few weeks ago) and I’m freeing myself to enjoy the night with him.

BUT, I did want to say something. Last Friday, I had a photoshoot for work as I believe I mentioned. Typically, I’ll get some florals to use in our shots and either distribute any undestroyed flowers to the team or bring some home myself. My floral bucket had been sitting next to my fireplace since Friday night. For four days, I walked around it, thinking each time “I should put these somewhere,” and then proceeding to not put them anywhere. You know how it goes.

I haven’t touched the styling on my mantel since I took down my Christmas decorations and reset my non-seasonal decor. That was back in early January. Nearly 10 months ago. I tend to do this. Style something or decorate something, and then it’s stagnant; not changing anything until I get so bored with everything I itch to make a huge change. This is a character flaw.

So anyway, yesterday, while I waited for Charles to grab his things before walking to pick up some food, I grabbed the bunch of thistles, grabbed an empty vessel, and married the two. I had a money tree to the right of that vase, so to avoid a plant-on-plant moment, I moved that plant, brought over some candlesticks, and called it a day. It’s not perfect, it’s whatever, but that tiny little change on the mantel injected a new energy into my living room. I stop and look at my flowers and candlesticks every time I walk by the mantel. A practice I very much didn’t do when I had gone blind to what was up there.

All that to say, never stop moving things around your home. I forget that often, even though I encourage others to do it. Like the time, on a whim, my friend and I moved her dining room into her oversized living room to create more of a multipurpose space, and moved her home office into her previous dining room and completely changed the vibe of her home. Don’t be married to how things currently are. Swap around decor and art and rugs. Move furniture. Heck, move room functions. You’d be SO surprised how much it reinvigorates you and your spaces. New energy is good energy.

Now…go move something around while I go enjoy my lillordag.

See you tomorrow, FOAS!
