A Kitchen Trend to Discuss, My Favorite Winter Fruit, A Sweet Show: 5 Quick Things
We did it again. We made it to Friday. Is it just me or does Halloween feel like 12 years ago already? It was Sunday! Not even seven days ago…time is a funny thing, I tell ya. I’ve spent much of the week dodging holiday content on every platform imaginable because mentally, it’s just too soon for me. It got me thinking back to my childhood when it was rather customary to go out and buy your tree (or pull out your fake tree) well into December. Heck, I remember going on December 23 with my dad to the local tree lot and there were still plenty of beautiful trees left (discounted, just like my dad preferred). Putting up decorations before or even around Thanksgiving was…just not something I remember people doing at all. At least not where I lived.
On the one hand, you get to enjoy it all for longer, but on the other hand…I get kind of sick of it. By the time the week of Christmas rolls around (if you celebrate), I’m itching to take everything down if it’s been up for too long. I don’t want to seem like I’m judging anyone for doing what they want, but it’s interesting to see how things have changed over the last 20 or so years. To each their own, truly, just commenting on where my head is at this week.
Speaking of this week, here are some of the things I’m sharing with you:
Quick Thing #1
I’m fairly certain I’ve recommended the show Love on the Spectrum (on Netflix) when the first season came out and I watched it, but I just finished the second season and I’ll go ahead and recommend it again. For those that don’t know, it’s a reality dating show that is literally the complete opposite of any dating show you’ve ever watched. Set in and around Australia, the show follows the relationship pursuits of a handful of men and women on the autism spectrum and it’s so pure and sweet. It’s just a handful of episodes and really lovely.
Quick Thing #2
Here’s another thing I’ve recommended nearly a year ago that’s back: sumo citrus! I spotted the gargantuan oranges at the supermarket this weekend, squealed while saying “omg is it sumo season already?!?!?” to Charles as I hurried to grab a couple. While I love summer produce and always mourn its loss when fall and winter come around, this sweet and juicy fruit I love so much nearly makes the loss of things like farm-fresh tomatoes worth it…almost. (If you can’t find them just yet, hang tight. They tend to pop up in January, so maybe I just got lucky with an early harvest here in California.)
Quick Thing #3
As I needed to spend 3+ hours at the doctor this week for a test, I gathered some reading material, my iPad, and a few other things for variety and needed a bag to hold it all. I normally just carry a small crossbody bag so I dug through my closet and pulled out my trusty, large Portland Leather tote (I have it in the nutmeg color). I first discovered this brand on Etsy about two years ago, and since, they’ve launched their own website and seem to have ramped up production. I also have one of their makeup bags that I don’t use for makeup. It’s the perfect zipped carryall to toss in a bag with computer and phone chargers, any kind of supply or something you like to carry with you (some masks, sanitizer, for instance? or maybe medications and snacks?). Anyhow, I’ve never recommended the brand, but I was prompted to after remembering how well made and sturdy their products are. The type of thing I’ll likely have for decades. Sharing because I think their stuff would make a great gift to a loved one or yourself!
Quick Thing #4
I enjoyed reading this short essay on Cup of Jo today about one of their editor’s engagements. While in and of itself it’s not the least bit like mine and Charles’ story, it did lead me to think about something I want to write about soon (did you know we don’t have wedding bands? A post for another day).
Quick Thing #5
Curved kitchen islands and cabinetry are very much on trend right now, and while I can admire photos like this one, I feel like it’s likely something that will date itself very quickly. What do you think?
See you on Monday, FOAS!
