My Love of the Scrub Daddy (+ A Little Tuesday Gratitudes)

Some days, I write about my favorite sneakers and others about bras or ranch dressing. Today, it’s my favorite sponge. Welcome to my late 30s. I have written the phrase “favorite sponge” and I have no regrets. But honestly, I have a Scrub Daddy in my kitchen and one in my bathroom and I’m here to tell you all about it.

But first, a little life aside, because we’re friends, and friends go on random tangents while sharing simple information. Also, it’s Tuesday, and around here, that used to mean sharing about gratitude!

This weekend, while Evelyn was taking her afternoon nap and Charles was doing a grocery pick-up run, I settled into the sofa to watch Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me on Apple TV. I’m not sure why I chose that to watch during some very rare downtime, but I did and honestly, it made me quite sad but also grateful. I’ll spare most of the details in case you’re interested in watching (I’m not a superfan or anything of the actress-singer but I like her enough from her past work), but it follows her over a few years while she battles anxiety, depression and ultimately, a bi-polar diagnosis after a psychotic break. The whole hour and a half of the documentary was a reminder to appreciate everything I have in my life, whether it’s exactly where I want to be or not because I get to enjoy it from a place of stability and happiness. Mental illness is dark, lonely and makes most dealing with it feel helpless and hopeless. You could have everything and it feels like nothing if you’re not mentally well.

As we went on our third walk of the day on Sunday (I explain why here), I recounted the movie to Charles while I looked down at my little girl’s toothy, adorable, genuine smile. How lucky I am to have what I’ve always wanted: a family, a daughter, peace and love. I never want to take that for granted.

Now, back to sponges.

My scrubby little friend!

Product name: The Original Scrub Daddy

A little about it: I picked this up on a whim a few months ago because I had heard good things about it. The description mentioned it was scratch-free and resisted odors, and as much as I try not to let our sponges get that sponge water funk to them, it always happens. Two eye holes are the perfect slot for fingers to hold on to the sponge and clean, and a smiling mouth serves as a utensil scrubber.

Why I like it: Besides just being cute and making me happy to look at it, this cleans really well! I’m not usually the dish doer in our home (I cook, Charles cleans), but I can report from Charles that he also really likes it. Run it under cold water and the Scrub Daddy is firm and rigid, which works well for stubborn stuck-on food or tougher cleaning jobs. Warm water softens up the material to get into crevices and works well for non-stick pans and the like. Plus, as I mentioned, it dries fast and rinses easily which means it avoids the dreaded sponge stink. Theirs a whole line now (like the Scrub Mommy that’s part scour foam, part sponge) and these things have a cult following.

Sponge or no sponge, feel free to use the comments here today to share your own gratitudes like we used to do during Project 365. See you tomorrow, FOAS.
