My Work-In-Progress Rough Bedroom Moodboard

There are a few things to start with today: 1. Sundays are not traditionally slotted for design, but I felt the need to clarify a few things for you all after Wednesday’s paint post. 2. LA feels like the inside of my air fryer on Max Crisp, so the motivation to get up off my cool wood floors to write this, on my burning-hot laptop, is at an all-time low so bare with me. I’ll keep it brief.

Today, I’m going to share with you my v2 moodboards as they stand. V2 because I took a look at v1 a few days ago and it was too heavy. I had picked rust-colored crushed velvet bedding, which looked awesome, but I knew in my heart of hearts that it just wasn’t for me. “As they stand” because I know my truth and these will change as I find some second-hand pieces (hopefully) or wake up in the middle of the night (or mid-shower, which is usually where these things happen) with an epiphany for masterful storage or the desperate need for a vanity or…something like that.

When I made these moodboards, I wasn’t really thinking too outside the box in terms of layout or what “areas” I could create, so keep that in mind. But I did want to show them to you so the paint color decisions had some more context. Whether these are the exact pieces I end up with, or if they pivot in style and function, the general “vibe” will likely stay the same. I just want a bedroom that has some design thought behind it, feels welcoming and happy but not overly peppy. No clever paint ideas (though upholstering walls with fabric and cornstarch solutions has absolutely crossed my mind…stay tuned for more on that possibly), no big DIY moments—again, I know myself and that would end in hysterics and too much money spent—just a bedroom that is like “hey, that looks nice.” Get me?

Bed | Plug-in Sconce | Nightstands | Cabinet | Dresser | Paint | Mirror | Curtains | Fabric Swatch | Rug | Lumbar Pillow | Duvet Cover | Quilted Set

And there she is. I’m pretty sure the rug is no longer available in the size I need, but I’ll be on the hunt for something similar. The caned cabinet (if I don’t find a burl wood armoire, that is) is a simple enough DIY idea I have for a piece I currently own. The nightstands and the dressers are a little clashy but I’m also not married to those nightstands. Just playing around with the look of burlwood, tbh.

As a reminder, here’s where I’m starting:

I need to see things “in place” to really visualize things, so I Photoshopped a few different angles using Dunn Edwards English Scone as the wall color (one of my finals in this post). Here’s the view toward my bed:

The bed (the Tatum Bed from the company I work for, Apt2B!) will be a rust velvet called Hacienda which is in the pipeline for us…the perks of working somewhere, you get to know what’s not yet available. Charles is possibly seeing this and saying “wait…what’s wrong with our current bed?!?” and probably won’t be happy, so there’s a chance we stick with our current bed as-is (however, the slats above the foundation are broken in a few places so…just saying CHARLES).

I very much want to incorporate burl wood in somewhere, so either in an armoire, a vanity desk or in the nightstands here. I’ve been searching burl wood dressers as well, but those tend to be so expensive.

My palette isn’t totally set yet. It still feels like it’s missing something. I think once I find the EXACT rug, I’ll be able to place what this room needs, color-wise. Maybe some plum, or olive green or something totally different!

The art is just something random I pulled from Minted I think just to bring in color, but I have some things in the wings I want to use throughout the room. Pieces that are a bit more sentimental to Charles and me.

That weird square over the chair is a Rebecca Atwood fabric I think is interesting. This baby needs reupholstery for sure, just not sure what yet. Again, I think it depends on what my final color palette ends up being!

This wall here is probably the most up in the air. I know I need to bring in some storage for shoes, suitcases, hanging clothes possibly. As I’ve mentioned, I’d love a stately burl wood armoire to ground the design, but originally had an idea to refresh an old Target cabinet I have in the guest bedroom. Essentially, I’d take the dresser that’s currently here and swap it out for the Target cabinet, pop out the glass door fronts and DIY some caning action. EASY! Ha, we’ll see.

I also have been playing around with the idea of putting a desk/vanity area here instead and bringing the armoire to Charles’ side of the bed in place of a nightstand. It’s all about finding the right vintage pieces and then I think everything will fall in line.

A few details:

  • Bed upholstery: The idea of doing a rust velvet on the bed makes me weep with delight. A velvet bed has long been a design crush and I’m in a hardcore terra cotta crush moment right now.
  • Bedding: I’m thinking a light, misty blue, or maybe something slate blue broken up with a patterned quilt and fun throw (I’m sweating already).
  • Curtains: I have IKEA Sanela curtains in the dining room and think they’re great. I love the yellow colorway they have so I’m looking to use those here mostly because the price is hard to beat.
  • Rug: This probably isn’t “THE” rug, but I wanted to show you the detail I pulled off the site. I’m looking for something with blues, greens, terra cottas, beige, ochre and maybe even a little pink.
  • Paint: I’ll be better equipped to pick the final color when I have the rug, I think, but as a reminder, here were my contenders from my last post:

Being that the bed will possibly be rust, I don’t want to do anything too orange-y or pink on the walls. All about finding the right apricot-y earth color. Wish me luck ha.

So that’s it for now. I’ll keep tinkering with this plan for sure while I hunt down the right furniture pieces, the right textiles and order in some samples of some things to see them in person, which is clutch, I think.

What do you think? Are you on board? Any initial thoughts? I’d love to hear them!
