The Nightstands I’m Considering For My Bedroom Makeover + More Shoppable Options
Project 365, Day 130/365
Remember when the majority of you followed me for design content? HA, I make no apologies. But today, I actually have something for all you who come to Arlyn Says occasionally and think “ugh, more ‘life’ stuff today?” It’s time to talk nightstands, what I’m looking for specifically, what kind of budget I’m working with for them, and some options that are feasible (but also kind of just a dream). While I’m not quite yet ready to decide—I need to figure out my bed first and then work from the wood tones that may end up having—I’m definitely getting closer. Come along, why dontcha?
As a reminder, here’s where I currently stand with my bedroom:
Charles is helping me model the room (gotta put those architecture skills to use, yeah?) to see what we feasible have space for, specifically a king-sized bed vs. our queen-sized, and what might work where. Things like that grasscloth cabinet may also be too big…same with the dresser, so before I get too excited about anything, gotta see if it’ll even fit. But today, we’re talking about nightstands, because those olive wood ones up there by MadeGoods, they’re just not in the budget at over $2,000 each. I’ve dug around for vintage ones, but here’s the thing: I prefer wide nightstands. Like…they must be over 24-inches because I’ve got a lot to fit on them, such as:
A collection of nearly empty water glasses, an insulated tumbler, my 32oz Hydroflask, a handful of thrown about prescription bottles and three different chargers, and of course, some delightful books, my glasses, maybe a lamp. I keep it classy in my bedroom, friends.
Of course, the idea would be to maybe stop my bad habits if I had a bedroom that actually looked good. I sort of kind of upheld that in my last apartment when the space was properly designed before I sold half the stuff to move across the country.
Another reason I prefer a large nightstand? I think single nightstands—typically anything around 18 inches—look a bit dinky next to a large upholstered queen or king-sized bed. If I had something a bit more delicate, maybe a spindle bed, a smaller nightstand would be just fine, but I’m drawn to plush, grander beds, and you know what you need for a grande bed? A grande nightstand.
The main downside to a double, or wide nightstand is the price, however. You rarely can find them at full retail for under $500. I’ve had some luck in the past on Wayfair and Overstock and Joss & Main, so those are great places to dig around to see what you might be able to discover. And of course, vintage, but those tend to be 3-drawer chests which may be too bulky visually for my current room.
I did some shopping for myself and split up my findings into two categories: Under $700 and $700+. I’m probably hovering right around the $600 a piece price point so either I need to land a great sale or luck out with a designer or press discount.
I really do like a great majority of these for my upcoming room design, but I’m leaning toward #1 below (it has a built-in charging port so my cords aren’t tangled all over the place), #7 (that motif is so eye-catching!) and #11 (the top is marble and I love the mix of materials as well as mostly closed storage to hide all the random things I tend to shove into my nightstand drawers when I’m cleaning…look, I never claimed to be a neat freak).

None of the below are really anything I can justify price-wise in my current budget but a girl can dream and figured I’d share in case they work for you (or you also like to dream). You already know how I feel about #1, I love the leather sling for books and magazines from #7 and I will never not fawn over campaign-style hardware like the handles on #9.

So, I think I’m edging closer to making a decision. I know once I pick key piece (or key pieces), the rest will snowball. I’ve been dragging my feet for basically a year but well, it’s been a very strange, hard year so I’m cutting myself some slack. Besides, rooms come together over time, so I’m also using that as an excuse.
See you tomorrow, FOAS.
