Big News: I Picked My Bedroom Wall Color

Project 365, Day 62/365

It’s finally happening. Nearly seven months since I first blogged about all the colors I was considering—a week before I fell and had no idea what was waiting on the other side of that fall for me—I actually picked my bedroom wall color.

The little squares you see up there have been up on my bedroom wall for over a month. I’ve stared at them morning, noon, evening. Held up fabric samples, pictures of furniture, pet them, asked them to speak to me. What? You didn’t know that whispering to your paint samples to whisper back to you was a crucial step in the process? OF COURSE IT IS.

About two weeks after I stuck or painted everything up there, I must have muttered something close to “what’s it going to be? what color, Arlyn?” while in bed. To which Charles said “You know, you haven’t even asked for my opinion.” ::awkardly looks around the room at nothing in particular:: Whoops. I don’t mean to design in a silo, but Charles usually lets me run with most of my ideas that I overlooked the most important part of designing OUR bedroom…talking to him about it. A few days later, when we both remembered, he stood in front of the wall of swatches and picked some of his favorites.

He first said Dunn-Edwards Peach was his pick. I could see why. It’s bright and peachy and happy. I liked it, too. But when I held up the rust velvet swatch I have (likely for the bed, though I’m wavering), I explained how it just wasn’t the right tone. It needs something earthier, without going too beige. I moved my hand over one square to the right, to Dunn-Edwards English Scone, and he said “Oh…now I see. Yeah, that’s better.”

Every few days, I’ll stop at the wall, do a little tap tap tap to English Scone, telling it “you’re the one” right before walking out of the room. At first, I thought I was trying to convince myself. It was between that and Modern Love from this new paint company called Backdrop. But Modern Love was just a bit too blush for what I was after, and English Scone won me over. It looks a little brown and muddy in these photos because it’s just a snapshot on my phone (and everything looks to have blueish, greenish undertones), but I really love it. It’s that fleshy, peachy, blushy hue I was searching for and this weekend (or next if I get lazy/tired/achy) is painting day! ARE YOU AS EXCITED AS I AM??

Here’s a little video I took on my phone in daylight to give you a better sense of the colors. It’s closest to the real thing when I zoom in at the end:

So there you have it…the journey of many months finally coming to an end (or rather, just beginning). I likely would have gone much richer if I was able to paint the moldings in the room and the carpeting wasn’t light brown. A highly saturated room makes my heart beat out of my chest, but this just isn’t the right space for it.

Here’s a photo again of the color samples with their names right on the image in case you’re wondering (with links below).

Pop | Wing It | Setting Plaster | Meet Cute | Modern Love | Harajuku Morning | Rose Quartz | Cashew Nut | Peach | English Scone

Before I go, I want to shoutout to Clare Paint and Backdrop for the amazing option of peel-and-stick color samples. Just genius!
